The Selfish Prince
The Siegfried that had first
began battle with the Raven had been happy.
A little more than happy, maybe, if he remembered correctly.
Siegfried had never been happy go lucky, because he was a prince in line to
the throne behind all his elder brothers and even though he'd likely never be
king he still had a responsibility to his people.
But he had always been happy, he'd been content. He'd been a
little listless, maybe a little lonely with a generous helping of pure hearted naiveté,
something which would often irk his first knight Lohengrin. He had been caring
and self-sacrificing and had often snuck out of the palace walls as a youth to
provide help to the needy and wanton. He had been a fan of the arts, of operas
and theatre and of ballets, and had come to learn
HomesickI am the river's son,
my arteries flowing turquoise
and turning to rapids
rushing around my frame,
filling me with this sense
of buoyancy, minnows
tickling my sternum.
I am the river's son.
My palms caress each
silty shoreline, every
battered bank and bend,
and these places I know
so well become me
as my fingerprint,
even the bridge above me
inflamed by the afternoon
sun-glow, burning rusty and
the steel blue sky.
I am the river's son;
I bring my home along
like hermit crab,
where I step
I pull water from the earth.
